Welcome to a collection of my favourite images
Railway photography has been my hobby for over 25 years. Having family in the rail industry & a fascination for trains from a young age I began my working railway life as a call boy at Valley Heights locomotive depot in 1976. Valley Heights is found in the lower Blue Mountains just west of Sydney, Australia and was an important locomotive depot for bank engines to assist trains traversing the steepest inclines of any mainline in Australia. I progressed up the ranks to Driver & stayed at Valley until it closed in 1987 when all mainline trains had enough horsepower without need for bank engines. All staff were re-located to depots of their choice & I selected Mt. Victoria where I am still located. The depot at Mt.Victoria works inter-urban double deck electric trains between Lithgow and Sydney.
Outside of work I take every chance I can get to go chasing trains for a couple of pics. An average day off from work might consist of a 5am start, 1100 km's of driving & 17 hrs later I arrive home with some new images that I hope might be published in my favourite magazine, Motive Power.
In the pre digital age my choice of camera was Contax & my film of choice was Fuji slide film.
I bought my first digital camera in 2001, a Kodak DC-4800, however I continued using my SLR for most purposes as digital had not progressed far enough for publication purposes. I progressed to a Sony DSC-F717 digital in 2002, but still used my Contax for publication purposes.
A trip to the U.S.A in 2004 resulted in buying a new digital camera, a Canon 300D. I only took four pics with my Contax on that trip & have been using digital ever since. In fact the four pics on slide film were never processed & the roll of film is still filed away in a cupboard.
My current cameras are all Canons - 30D, 40D & a 50D, & my current arsenal of lenses include a 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 24-105mm & a 70-200mm.
